Class will begin with a quick write
"How do the languages you speak affect your identity?" Some students may feel they only speak one language - this will provide the opportunity for students to engage in a fun emoji activity in which I will present emojis to create a phrase or sentence and students will tell me what it says - what are other languages you might not realize you speak? Students will be assigned a figure from the textbook related to language, its diffusion, and its importance in creating a transnational and globalized world. After completing a worksheet with a partner on the figure, the students will engage in a fishbowl discussion on each figure with those assigned to the figures leading the discussion with a guiding question. After the activity, students will reflect on how the activity went, and also what places have affected the languages they speak. |
